Supporting Women from Community to Health:

Strong Women of Faith

Celebrating Women all Month Long!

Here’s to the mothers, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, nieces and all the women in our lives. Today, Unite Health Share Ministries (UHSM) joins those worldwide to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) yesterday; a global day to honor and elevate women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements; regardless of outside divisions.

The UHSM community commemorates its roots in creating a stronger union for women standing together in faith, fellowship, family, and friendship.

Let’s stand together in Christ and be strong together!

International Women’s Day:

A Lookback on its History

Stemming from unrest and crucial debates throughout the early 1900s, New York City hosted an early women’s march. A collection of 15,000 women protested against unfair working conditions while insisting on voting rights. A year later, in 1909, National Women’s Day (NWD) was declared by the Socialist Party of America, envisioned to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women.

However… It wasn’t until 1913 that the observation was modified from the last Sunday of February to the date we are now accustomed to, March 8.

IWD soon became a mechanism for protesting war, expressing solidarity with activists with large gatherings, including one in the Netherlands with over 1,300 women from 12 countries. By 1977, the United Nations (UN) had officially recognized IWD, strengthening the movement with global women’s conferences and enacting annual campaign themes.

International Women’s Day in Faith

In a world where certain groups seek to continue to oppress and denigrate women, the Scripture offers a solid foundation to continue to uphold women. Throughout teachings, women are treasured by Christ and valued for their contributions to the early church. Pew Research revealed women are more likely to be affiliated with a religious organization, participate in prayer, and be inclined to impart that religion is an essential aspect of their life than men.

This should come as no surprise, given the Christian worldview provides compelling reasons to cherish women and girls worldwide, starting with the beginning of creation, Adam and Eve.

The Scripture tells us that while God made Adam first, it was not a complete reflection of His image. Eve was created to reflect God’s fundamental image of a helper, or in Hebrew, an ezer. Under God’s image, women have immeasurable worth, helping to overcome oppression and war and defending / rescuing His children.

Such Biblical accounts stand on their own against the mistreatment and devaluing of women in other parts of history.

“A gracious woman gains honor; violent men gain only wealth.’ The Good News: Any woman who is compassionate in her life will be rewarded in heaven, while those who act in anger will be punished.”

– Proverbs 11:16

Let’s Celebrate IWD 2023

Celebrating Women Goes Beyond Women’s Day!

While parts of the world still have some work to do regarding equality, UHSM continues to encourage and spotlight those women in its community endeavoring on their journeys from girl bosses to family life. If you’re looking to support the women in your life, here are a few small ways you can.

  • Within your household, provide your girls with the resources they may need to harness their unique gifts and abilities.
  • Acknowledge the women in our lives who are serving their communities with words of appreciation for their contributions.
  • Support locally women-owned businesses, whether it’s by introducing them to your community, promoting them on social media or directly shopping there.
  • Offer a prayer for the women across the globe who are still fighting against their oppressors and being denied basic human rights and equality.
  • Give to organization’s working to positively impact a community of women with whatever amount you can, such as Cancer Kinship.

Continue to cherish, celebrate, love, and support the women in your life, today, tomorrow, and for the rest of this year, and beyond!
